50 Cent: An Analysis

Did you watch the Super Bowl halftime show this Sunday? In case you missed it, the rapper 50 Cent made a surprise appearance as part of the ensemble performance with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar, performing his 2003 hit “In Da Club” (you can watch it here). He opened his performance by swinging upside down on the rafters on the room-like stage set up, an homage to the “In Da Club” music video released in 2009.

Targeted at those who watched the performance, social media users (mostly on Twitter) started posting memes making fun of 50 Cent’s surprising entrance and implicitly encouraged others to do the same. As the meme has gone viral, viewers that might be experiencing FOMO from missing the performance will potentially watch the video of it the NFL posted on Youtube. Although it’s free to watch, the money gained from Youtube ads will go to both the NFL and Pepsi, the official halftime sponsor. Although artists are not paid to perform, 50 Cent will most likely receive ad money from increased views on the original music videos and potential brand deals from companies hoping to capitalize on the viral moment.

Posted to his Twitter account on Monday, 50 Cent shared his own meme joking about the viral moment, earning over 24,000 likes. That being said, the tweet has been screenshotted and shared on other social media platforms, so it’s difficult to tell the exact performance metrics. While the meme had the potential to cause body insecurity for him, he took it in stride and laughed it off.

Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre began the acclaimed ensemble with renditions of The Next Episode and California Love, before 50 Cent delivered his upside down outing flanked by a group of dancers.  50 Cent wasn’t the only performer being talked about on social media. Many users praised the nostalgic rap ensemble. “In Da Club” was the only 50 Cent song performed: Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre began with “The Next Episode” and “California Love”, Mary J. Blige sang “Family Affair” and “No More Pain”, Kendrick Lamar rapped “m.A.A.d city” and “Alright”, Eminem performed “Lose Yourself”, and the group closed the song with “Still D.R.E.”.

Until next week,
